Give them Something to Believe In.

So it is the day after the election and pretty much everyone is happy that we are finally at the end - regardless of your political views everyone was just about over saturated with this race and the "closure" that the decision brings is somewhat of a relief.
I was listening to a report about the canvassing and tireless support that some of these advocates had given to their candidates - door to door work, holding signs, making calls, handing out information and pretty much selling their candidate. Interestingly many of these people were not sales people and I am sure they suffered from some of the hidden weaknesses we uncover in people and no doubt some of them suffer from these quite severely, and yet they were involved in sales activities, they sucked it up and overcame these fears. What a lesson for business leaders. Could you "Obama-Fy" your people by giving them something to believe, a big picture view of your company and a clear vision of the "how you help" factor.
Of course the best option is to have all the right people in the right seats, however it is also true that sometimes we don't and even the wrong people will serve your business better if you give them something to believe in.

Passion is a powerful force. When I interview a prospect, I look for passion. If they don't have it, I wonder why and if I can't figure it out, I'll probably 'pass' on the opportunity to help them grow their business. I financial adviser that doesn't 'live' to make his clients rich should do something else. I'm passionate about 'doing business' and live to help my clients 'do business'. Passion creates desire and commitment and people with desire and commitment will if they can, but might even if they can't.
Great post!

Frank: so you've got half the story right. Having pumped up normal folks and gotten them to go out and push past their normal boundaries, now comes the real challenge - making sure that they feel that it was all worthwhile. In the case of Obama, he's going to need to move fast to show his supporters that he appreciates all that they have done for him. The next few months should be quite interesting...

Great post Frank.

We're really talking about evangelizing, the inspired story telling of people who are passionate enough to put themselves out there. They don't have to be salespeople to evangelize because they don't have to hunt (prospect) in the traditional sense - nor do they have to close anyone for anything. Just keep telling that story.
